Tongabezi Lodge

Tongabezi Lodge is an exclusive lodge situated on the banks of the Zambezi River, 15km upstream from the magnificent Victoria Falls. The first river lodge on the Zambian side of the Victoria Falls, Tongabezi Lodge is privately owned and run, with the emphasis on exclusivity and romance, enhanced by the warmth and hospitality of the people of Zambia.

Tongabezi is a small, secluded lodge set in a tranquil grove of African ebony trees on a sweeping bend of the Zambezi River. The guest accommodation, located only meters from the river, consists of five cottages and four spacious, open-planned stone and thatch houses. All rooms have fabulous river views and en-suite bathrooms.

Each house and cottage at Tongabezi has its own valet who will be with you throughout your stay to ensure that you make the most of all the comforts it has to offer. With his in-depth knowledge of Tongabezi and the surrounding area, he can become your indispensable companion.

Tongabezi River CottageEach has a large double bed or two singles, plus a mosquito net and ensuite bath and shower, along with indoor and outdoor areas where guests can dine under the stars or simply sit and enjoy the ever-changing river views. Because the River Cottages are close-fronted with gauze netting in the windows, we find they are better suited to guests who feel nervous about sleeping 'outdoors', but still wish to listen to the sounds of the bush at night. A valet is assigned to each cottage at Tongabezi Lodge.

Tongabezi Garden CottageThe Garden Cottage is ideal for a family or couple seeking luxury and privacy close to Victoria Falls. The house is hidden behind a private walled garden and set back from the river. It is the only one of our properties without views of the Zambezi. Beautifully designed and furnished using local materials, it is fitted with a luxury king-size bed and has a private living room with fireplace, an open-air sunken bath and an additional twin bedroom.

Tongabezi Honeymoon HouseThe first of our four houses at Tongabezi, Honeymoon House earned its name because of its perfect romantic location beside the Zambezi River. It was built with indulgence and privacy in mind - there is a private balcony overlooking the river that provides a perfect setting for a secluded candlelit dinner beneath the stars. Alternatively, you can choose to dine with our other guests on one of the river decks.

Tongabezi Bird HouseBird House is one of four superb thatched houses at Tongabezi. With sweeping views over the Zambezi River, it has an open-air sunken bath and a private terrace for dining under the stars. Guests can go canoeing on the river, join game drives, bush walks and a boat trip to Victoria Falls. Luxury camps such as Tongabezi Lodge provide a perfect base to explore this stunning corner of Africa.

Tongabezi Tree HouseThe Tree House has a split level design that has been cleverly built into the cliff front. Enjoy dinner at eye level with the Fish Eagles on the elevated deck or wander downstairs for a shower that is so close to the river you might spot the Eagle's dinner swimming around! This house is reached from a stone path that winds along the cliff face. Truly secluded and generously proportioned it is the ultimate private retreat. As with all our houses a main feature is the king-size bed, complete with luxurious down pillows and duvet, and a magnificent airy mosquito net so your sleeping comfort is assured. The Tree house has a knowledgeable valet on hand to take care of your every need and whim.

Tongabezi Dog HouseLocated at the water's edge and looking out across the Zambezi, Dog House is an open-fronted house uniquely designed and furnished with local materials. It is dominated by a comfortable king-size bed that comes with down pillows and duvet, and a large, airy mosquito net. Like all the houses at Tongabezi, it has a large open-air sunken bath with stunning views over the river. There is a spacious deck for private dining and, in common with all the rooms at Tongabezi, Dog House is assigned its own valet. A perfect setting for a safari at Victoria Falls.

Tongabezi Nut HouseA haven from the elements, it is entirely enclosed with light streaming in through every wall. Charming glass tiles reflect the sunrise in African patterns onto the wood and stone floors. Folding doors open into the private garden and infinity plunge pool, all offering spectacular views over the Zambezi from the elevated position on the river bank.

Tongabezi Lodge's swimming pool is landscaped into a natural cliff and meals are served in the large dining room or on the deck overlooking the river. The camp also has its own croquet lawn, jetty, tennis courts and a school for the local children.

Activities available at Tongabezi Lodge include, visits to Victoria Falls, Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Park and Livingstone museums and markets, as well as boat trips, canoeing, white water rafting and tiger fishing on the river, tennis on a grass tennis court, swimming in the pool built into the rock, golf, croquet and riding.

Also available are special champagne luncheons on Livingstone Island, in the middle of the Falls, and fully catered canoe safaris camping on islands.

If you are visiting for a few days, consider spending an unforgettable night or two at Sindabezi Island Camp, Tongabezi's private island paradise nestled in the waters of the Zambezi near the Victoria Falls. Access from Tongabezi Lodge is by a short banana boat ride, or a guided canoe trip, where you may be lucky enough to spot a pod of wallowing hippo or elephant drinking on the river bank.
